Say what was never said, anger and hurt separately

Let the old complaint become specific, and give the anger and the sadness each their own voice.

なぜ効果があるのか

Unfinished business often starts out as a tangle of blame and complaint. In the Emotion-Focused Therapy account, the work moves from that tangle toward the specific underlying feelings, most often anger and sadness, each expressed fully and separately. Process research on these dialogues found that the degree of emotional arousal distinguished people who resolved their unfinished business from those who did not: feeling it, not only describing it, appears to matter.

やり方

  1. Start with the complaint as it comes: "You always..." or "You never...". Let it be unfair at first.
  2. Then make it specific: "When you ___, I felt ___."
  3. Notice whether anger or sadness is underneath. Say the anger in its own sentences ("I am angry that you...").
  4. Then, separately, say the sadness or hurt ("What hurt most was..."). Pause between them.

エビデンス

Greenberg and Malcolm (2002) studied empty-chair dialogues in 26 clients and found that the degree of emotional arousal discriminated between those who resolved their unfinished business and those who did not. A 2026 study of brief emotion-focused therapy for grief that had stayed stuck, in 26 clients, found that emotional arousal amplified the link between in-session emotional change during empty-chair work and later outcomes. (observational)

These are process studies within therapy: they show which in-session features go with better outcomes, not that turning up the intensity alone causes change. Strong feeling is useful only while you can still stay in the present. If what comes up leaves you flooded, losing track of where you are, or with images that will not settle, stop and continue this work with a trained therapist.

よくある間違い

Staying in blame and complaint for the whole dialogue. Venting the same accusation louder is not the same as reaching the hurt underneath it, and repeating it tends to keep the loop going.
