Indra’s net reflection: one object containing its conditions

Take one ordinary object or event and trace how it holds the reflections of its causes, its makers and the people it touches, until the boundary you started with looks porous.

なぜ効果があるのか

The Huayan teaching is that each jewel in Indra’s net reflects all the others, so each one contains the whole net in miniature. The contemplation turns that image into a method: a single thing is examined as the meeting point of many conditions rather than as a self-standing unit. Fazang’s hall of mirrors, described in the sources below, is the teaching device built to show this. The practice does not claim the object literally contains the universe; it trains attention to notice dependence in the thing you were treating as complete, which is the same move the school makes when it describes phenomena as mutually containing.

やり方

  1. Choose an ordinary object, such as a cup, a letter or a meal, and sit or stand with it in front of you.
  2. Name one thing it depends on: the materials, the hands that made it, the water or energy that sustains it, the person who gave it to you.
  3. For each named condition, ask what that condition depends on in turn, and let the chain widen.
  4. Pause on the point where the object seems to contain the chain: the cup holds the workers, the weather and the clay as reflections in its one form.
  5. Return to the object, and notice whether it still looks like a single, separate thing, or like a meeting point.

エビデンス

The net image and the method built on it come from the Huayan commentarial tradition. The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Fazang records the hall of mirrors Fazang used to illustrate Indra’s net. Cook’s 1977 study is the standard English introduction to the school; I verified its publisher record but did not read its text for this page. No controlled study has tested this contemplation. (mechanistic)

The cognitive framing here is an interpretation, not a finding. The evidence is the school’s own teaching and its historical record. Dahl and colleagues (2015) describe how analytic meditation can loosen the sense of a fixed self, and this practice is analytic in that way, but their study is not about Huayan. Cleary (1983) is an edited volume of Huayan material; I verified its Crossref record only.

よくある間違い

Treating the exercise as a proof that everything is literally one thing, then feeling the object has lost its usefulness. The point is seeing dependence, not dissolving the cup.
