Seeing mutual containment in work and home

In an ordinary relationship or task, notice the parts of other people’s lives that are present in what you do, and what your choices contain of them.

なぜ効果があるのか

The Huayan teaching of mutual containment holds that each phenomenon contains the others, so that a single act is never only one person’s. Applying this to work and home is a way to bring the relational structure of the teaching into a setting where people are usually treated as separate. The mechanism, as the school describes it, is that attention shifts from my act to the web it sits in, which can change how a task is framed. The idea is an interpretation of the school’s teaching; no study has measured it.

やり方

  1. Pick one repeated task at work or home, such as a meeting, a meal or a shared chore.
  2. List the people whose lives are present in it, including those who made the tools, planned the schedule and will be affected by the outcome.
  3. Ask what of each of them is in the way you are doing this, and what of you is in theirs.
  4. Choose one action that makes the containment more visible, such as naming a person’s contribution or asking how a decision will land for someone else.
  5. Afterwards, note whether the task felt larger or smaller, and whether your part in it changed.

エビデンス

The idea follows the school’s teaching of interpenetration, described in the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy entry on Fazang. The application to work and home is my extension of that teaching and is not in the sources. Dahl and colleagues (2015) describe how analytic meditation can change the sense of a bounded self, which is related but not about this application. (mechanistic)

Applying a metaphysical teaching to working relationships is an interpretation. It can be useful as a way of attending, and it can also become a way of excusing responsibility. Keep the practice to what you can act on yourself.

出典

よくある間違い

Using mutual containment to conclude that responsibility is shared so widely that nothing is yours to do. The practice is to see your part inside the web, not to dissolve it.
