Why it works

How to do it

Secondary appraisal (perceived coping capacity) is a robust predictor of stress outcomes across multiple studies. Interventions that increase perceived coping resources — including problem-solving training, social support, and self-efficacy enhancement — consistently reduce stress and anxiety outcomes. Folkman and colleagues’ analysis of real stressful encounters linked the coping people actually mobilized to their appraisals and to the emotional outcome of the encounter, grounding secondary appraisal in observed coping rather than theory alone. (observational)

Most research measures appraisals post-hoc; controlled interventions specifically targeting secondary appraisal as a standalone technique are limited relative to broader CBT and problem-solving interventions.
