Develop an internalised representation of the person

Build a rich inner sense of who the person was that you carry and consult in daily life.

Why it works

Internalised representations — inner working models of important relationships — are how close relationships survive physical absence in general, not only death. Cultivating a vivid, nuanced internal representation of the deceased draws on the same attachment system that allowed them to provide security in life. It transforms an external relationship into an internal resource, reducing the felt absence while preserving the connection.

How to do it

  1. Write a detailed description of the person: their characteristic phrases, gestures, values, humour, opinions.
  2. Note specific memories that capture who they were, not just that they existed.
  3. When you face a decision the person would have had a view on, ask internally what they might have said.
  4. Allow the inner representation to evolve as you continue to reflect on who they were.

Evidence

Internalised continuing bonds are associated with healthy bereavement adjustment in observational research; Klass’s foundational work with bereaved parents found that maintaining inner connection was common among those who adjusted well. (observational)

The continuing bonds research is primarily observational; causation is not established. Some forms of connection (searching, idealisation, dependence) predict worse outcomes — the quality and type of bond matters significantly.

Common mistake

Maintaining only an idealised version that eliminates the person’s flaws and complexity — which is a different psychological process (idealisation) associated with complicated grief, not the balanced inner representation that supports healthy adjustment.
