Practise as uncovering, not becoming

Reframe the point of practice from turning into someone better to removing what covers what is already there.

Por que funciona

In the Tathāgatagarbha Sūtra, as Zimmermann reads it, beings are not yet buddhas because they are not aware of what they contain, yet their nature is not different from a buddha’s; they become buddhas once the sheaths of defilement are removed. That changes what effort is for. In a closely related text Zimmermann discusses, the decisive step is recognising what one has always carried — but a recognition that comes from following the path, which he stresses goes far beyond abstractly remembering that one has buddha-nature. Effort aimed at one specific covering is concrete and finishable in a way that effort aimed at becoming a different person is not.

Como fazer

  1. Write down what you are trying to become through your practice, in your own words.
  2. Rewrite it as something you are trying to remove or see through — “a more patient person” becomes “the habit of hurrying people when I am anxious.”
  3. Practise against that one covering for a set period, noticing each time it appears.
  4. When you have a moment free of it, notice what is there in its place, without claiming it as an achievement.
  5. Return to the list when one covering thins; there is usually another underneath.

Evidência

The framing is from the Tathāgatagarbha Sūtra as analysed by Zimmermann (pp. 50–53, 62–66), including the final simile, in which a smith breaks the blackened clay moulds at the right moment and golden figures appear, and his discussion of recognition through the path in the related Tathāgatotpattisambhavanirdeśa. Support is textual and practitioner-based; no study has compared this framing with others. (anecdotal)

The sūtra does not settle how the uncovering happens. Zimmermann notes it leaves open whether a being merges with the buddha within or is enabled to act by it, and that its formulation carried a risk later commentators had to face: if the result is already present, the need for purification is easy to ignore.

Erro comum

Concluding that nothing needs doing because you are already a buddha — Zimmermann names this exact danger in the teaching, which can give the impression that serious practice is irrelevant.
