Exaggerate the gesture
Take a small repeated movement or tone of voice and deliberately make it bigger, to hear what it is saying.
Por que funciona
Gestalt therapists pay close attention to the gap between what someone says and what their body and voice are doing; Perls held that posture and movement often say more than the words. When a gesture keeps recurring, such as a tapping foot, a clenched jaw or a voice that drops, the person is asked to repeat and exaggerate it, so that the feeling driving the movement becomes noticeable and the energy held back in it can be expressed. Amplifying something makes it impossible to keep overlooking.
Como fazer
- Notice a small movement you keep making while talking about something that matters: a hand that brushes something away, shoulders that rise, a smile that will not leave.
- Repeat it on purpose, a little bigger each time, for a minute.
- Ask what the movement is doing and give it words in the first person: "I am pushing this away", "I am holding myself in".
- Notice whether the words fit what you were saying, or something you were not saying.
Evidência
Witchel's 1973 review describes asking a client to exaggerate a movement repeatedly so that the feelings motivating it come into awareness, and Iritani's 2005 analysis of Perls's techniques lists amplification by repetition and exaggeration among his core methods. Perls's emphasis on what movement and posture reveal is quoted from Gestalt Therapy Verbatim by Overholser. It is established Gestalt practice with no study of its own. (clinical)
A gesture is a question, not a verdict: what a movement "means" is for you to find, not for anyone else to decide. Amplifying a held-back movement can release strong feeling quickly; if it becomes more than you can stay with, stop and continue with a trained therapist.

Erro comum
Interpreting the gesture from outside ("that means you are defensive") instead of doing it and finding out. The method is to amplify and listen, not to decode.

Mais práticas para Gestalt Therapy: Awareness, Ownership and Contact in the Here and Now
- Follow the awareness continuum
Say what you are aware of, moment by moment, in the present tense, instead of explaining it.
- Change "it" language into "I" language
Say "I am trembling" instead of "it is trembling", and add "and I take responsibility for it" to what you say.
- Notice the top dog and the underdog
Hear the bossy inner voice of "shoulds" and the quiet part that stalls, and let each say its piece.
- Notice the unfinished situation pulling at your attention
Find the unmet need that keeps drawing your attention away from the present, and name it in your own words.
- Notice how you interrupt contact
Catch the moment you turn a reaction back on yourself, or swallow someone else's rule whole, instead of meeting what is there.
- Respect the rhythm of contact and withdrawal
When you need to pull back, do it deliberately, notice where you go, and then return.
