Notice how you interrupt contact

Catch the moment you turn a reaction back on yourself, or swallow someone else's rule whole, instead of meeting what is there.

Por que funciona

Gestalt theory locates experience at the contact boundary, the meeting point between a person and their surroundings. Perls, Hefferline and Goodman describe ways that contact gets interrupted: retroflection, doing to yourself what you would like to do to someone else (biting your lip instead of answering back); introjection, swallowing a rule or belief whole without chewing it over; projection, attributing your own disowned feeling to others; and confluence, losing the boundary so you no longer know where you end and another person begins. Noticing which one you are doing turns an automatic habit into a choice.

Como fazer

  1. Recall a recent moment you felt something and did not express it. What did you do with it instead?
  2. If you turned it on yourself (self-criticism, a tight jaw, scratching, a headache afterwards), name it as retroflection and ask who it was really meant for.
  3. If you acted on a rule you have never questioned ("people like us don't complain"), write the rule down and ask whether you have ever chewed it over or simply swallowed it.
  4. Choose one small, safe way to complete the contact this week: say the thing, ask the question, or decide the rule is yours after all.

Evidência

The contact boundary and its interruptions are core theory in Perls, Hefferline and Goodman (1951), whose self-experiment volume has chapters on retroflection, introjection and projection and an experiment titled "Converting Confluence into Contact". Witchel's 1973 review summarizes the contact boundary and the avoidance processes, and Overholser quotes Perls on "chewing up" and assimilating difficult experience. Established Gestalt theory; no study isolates this exercise. (clinical)

These are descriptive categories from clinical theory, not measured constructs. Projection is covered more fully on the shadow work page; the point here is noticing the interruption, not labelling yourself.

Erro comum

Treating every held-back reaction as an interruption to fix. Sometimes not saying something is the wise choice; the practice is to make it a choice rather than a reflex.
