Tell apart having the capacity from having worked through your current problems

Separate knowing you could handle a bigger role from having solved the problems of the one you hold now, and notice whether the old fixes are already breaking down.

Por que funciona

Graves’s account says that the underlying capacity for a higher way of living is not enough on its own. The person also has to solve the problems of the current level, and then go through a breakdown of the solutions that have stopped working. He reports that none of his subjects made the jump to a higher level without a period of crisis and regression first, so that breakdown is part of the path rather than a sign of unreadiness. Skipping the work leaves the move unfinished even when the capacity is there.

Como fazer

  1. List the three problems your current role or stage of life most requires you to handle.
  2. For each, write whether you have actually handled it well, or only know how it should be handled.
  3. If the old fixes are breaking down, write that down as information about the path, and ask whether an insight into the new problem has arrived yet.
  4. Decide what closing the most important gap would look like before taking on the next role.

Evidência

Graves reports these conditions from his data. The passage is set at 27.0pt, a different indent from the .5in passages that the reprint’s note clearly marks as heavily edited by Ed Cornish, so its editorial status is unconfirmed. Its wording should not be read as verbatim Graves until confirmed. (anecdotal)

The conditions for moving up are Graves’s account, as the reprint presents them, and the passage’s editorial status is unconfirmed. Whether this checklist predicts a successful move was not tested, and the list is this page’s own method.

Erro comum

Treating a sense of being able to do more as proof that the current problems are finished, and then feeling stuck once in the new role. The opposite mistake is reading every breakdown of old fixes as proof you are not ready.
