Watch what the ego is protecting
In the moment you flare up, ask whether you are protecting feeling safe, feeling important, or feeling lasting.
Por que funciona
Cook-Greuter (2018) describes an "Ego-aware" form of the Construct-aware stage in which a person becomes aware of how the ego works: it tries to make us feel secure, important and enduring, and defends against dissonant information. Naming which of the three a reaction is guarding turns a defensive flash into an observable event. She is explicit that striving to overcome the ego tends to strengthen attachment, so the practice is kindly noticing rather than suppressing.
Como fazer
- Pick one recurring situation where you tend to get defensive — feedback, being interrupted, being doubted.
- When the flare comes, pause long enough to ask: "Am I protecting feeling safe, feeling important, or feeling like this will last?"
- Note the answer in a word or two afterward. Do not analyze it further in the moment.
- At the end of the week, look for which of the three shows up most.
- Meet what you find with the kindness you would offer a friend; the ego is doing the job it exists to do.
Evidência
The three aims (secure, important, enduring) and the defense against dissonant information are taken from Cook-Greuter’s 2018 description of the Ego-aware form of stage 5/6. She notes it seems rarer than construct-awareness. The noticing exercise applies her description and has not been tested; related contemplative traditions use similar noticing. (mechanistic)
Cook-Greuter’s 2000 paper is listed for its framing question only; its text was not reviewed for this page. Noticing a defense is not the same as being free of it.

Erro comum
Turning the practice into a campaign against the ego. Cook-Greuter observes that the harder one strives for detachment from ego, the more attached one becomes to the striving.
