See the intention before the movement

Catch the intention to move just before the movement, and see experience as conditions giving rise to results.

Por que funciona

Mahasi Sayadaw’s second knowledge, discerning conditionality, is illustrated with a plain example: when bending a limb, the consciousness intending to bend is evident first, then the bending. The meditator understands directly that when there is the intention, the movement arises. Noticing that each event has conditions — an intention, a sense contact, an earlier thought — replaces the sense of a self that simply acts with a chain of conditions and results that can be watched.

Como fazer

  1. In walking or sitting, before any deliberate movement, pause and note “intending” before you move.
  2. Then note the movement itself: “lifting,” “bending,” “stretching.”
  3. When the mind wanders, see if you can catch what triggered it — a sound, a sensation, an earlier thought.
  4. Do not hunt for causes intellectually; just let the before-and-after relationship be seen when it is plain.

Evidência

The second knowledge in Mahasi’s Progress of Insight, which he places under the Visuddhimagga’s purification by overcoming doubt; Mahasi’s Manual of Insight gives detailed noting instructions for intention and movement. Support is textual and practitioner-based. (anecdotal)

Not separately studied. The causal sequence it describes is a contemplative observation, not a neuroscience claim about how intention and movement are related.

Erro comum

Slowing everything down so far that noting intention becomes the whole point — the tradition uses slow movement to make the sequence visible, not as an end in itself.
