Bear the sting of owning a shadow projection
Expect owning what you projected to feel humiliating, and stay with that long enough to take responsibility for one concrete instance.
Por que funciona
Jung writes that recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real is the basis of self-knowledge and usually meets considerable resistance. von Franz adds that insight into one's shadow projections is first of all a moral humiliation and can involve real suffering. If that sting is read as a sign that something has gone wrong, the projection is quickly put back on the other person. Knowing in advance that it is part of the process makes it easier to stay long enough to own one specific act.
Como fazer
- Pick a quality you have recently condemned in someone else and a concrete moment when you did something similar, however small.
- Write that moment down in one plain sentence, without explanations or excuses.
- Notice the discomfort (heat in the face, an urge to justify, an urge to change the subject) and let it be there for a few breaths.
- Decide one small act of responsibility for that moment, such as an apology, a repair, or a different choice next time.
Evidência
The moral effort of recognizing the shadow is in the shadow chapter of Jung's Aion. von Franz's description of shadow insight as first of all a moral humiliation is from Projection and Re-collection. Both rest on clinical experience. (anecdotal)
Owning a fault is different from collapsing into shame about it. If the humiliation turns into lasting self-attack, or you feel flooded and cannot come back to the present, stop and work on it with a trained therapist.

Erro comum
Turning the insight into a sweeping verdict ("I am just as bad as they are"). von Franz's point is a specific moral recognition, not wholesale self-condemnation; the work is to own one concrete instance and act on it.

- Catch a projection by its heat and certainty
Treat a reaction that is both strongly emotional and completely certain about someone else as the moment to check for projection.
- Locate the projection on von Franz's five stages
Use von Franz's account of how a projection comes apart to see where you are with one specific person.
- Re-collect the energy instead of calling it an illusion
When you realize a reaction was projection, ask what in you was producing it, rather than simply writing it off.
- Pay the shadow out in a small symbolic act
Give the energy behind a projection a deliberate, contained, symbolic outlet instead of letting it land on a person.
- Find what the condemned trait could protect in you
Ask what a measured amount of the quality you condemn in someone else might do for you.
