Re-collect the energy instead of calling it an illusion
When you realize a reaction was projection, ask what in you was producing it, rather than simply writing it off.
Por que funciona
In von Franz's sequence, declaring a projection an illusion is the fourth stage, not the last. The fifth is recognizing the power of one's own psyche to produce it, and she uses the image of scattered sparks being gathered back to describe re-collection. Jung makes a related point in Aion: people withdraw emotionally charged projections only once they are convinced they cast a long shadow themselves. Saying "it was just projection" ends the story about the other person without asking where the charge came from in you, so it tends to attach to the next person who fits.
Como fazer
- Write the sentence you use to dismiss the reaction ("I was just projecting").
- Under it, ask: if this energy was mine, what was it doing? What was it trying to protect, punish or get?
- Name one place in your own life where the same energy shows up, even in a small or disguised form.
- Note one thing you could do differently there, so that the energy has somewhere to go other than the next person.
Evidência
Re-collection is von Franz's term and the subject of her book; the review by Nidever summarizes her image of gathering scattered sparks back into consciousness. Jung's remark that people must be convinced of their own long shadow before they withdraw charged projections is in the shadow chapter of Aion. Both are clinical accounts, not tested claims. (anecdotal)
There is no research on re-collection as a practice. If tracing the energy back leads to memories or feelings that will not settle, or you start to feel flooded or lose track of where you are, stop and continue with a trained therapist.

Erro comum
Using "I was projecting" as a way to stop feeling anything about the situation. A quick dismissal often feels like insight while leaving the pattern intact; the test is whether the same reaction stops appearing with new people.

Treat a reaction that is both strongly emotional and completely certain about someone else as the moment to check for projection.

Use von Franz's account of how a projection comes apart to see where you are with one specific person.
- Bear the sting of owning a shadow projection

- Pay the shadow out in a small symbolic act
Give the energy behind a projection a deliberate, contained, symbolic outlet instead of letting it land on a person.
- Find what the condemned trait could protect in you
Ask what a measured amount of the quality you condemn in someone else might do for you.
