Notice when you rush someone else past their pain
Catch yourself offering a spiritual reframe to someone who is still hurting, and stay with them instead.
Por que funciona
Bypassing is not only something we do to ourselves. Welwood writes that compassion needs grounding ("without earth, there would be no compassion"), and that "if we are only oriented toward spirit, we tend to get impatient with other people's stuckness." Masters' book has a chapter titled "Neurotic tolerance in caring's clothing: blind compassion", and in his BatGap interview he gives "that must just be your karma" as a line he contrasts with stepping in and saying no.
Como fazer
- Recall the last time someone told you about a loss or hurt. What did you say first? Was it a reframe, a teaching or a silver lining?
- Ask what you might have been feeling in that moment that the reframe helped you avoid (helplessness, sadness, discomfort).
- Next time, stay with the person's words first: reflect what they said and how it sounds to you before offering any perspective.
- Offer a larger view only if they ask for it, or after they feel heard.
Evidência
The link between grounded compassion and impatience with others' stuckness is from Welwood's 1984 article. Masters' book has a chapter titled "Neurotic tolerance in caring's clothing: blind compassion", and the karma line is from his BatGap interview. Practitioner writing, not a tested intervention. (anecdotal)
Untested as a practice. Being present with someone else's pain is not the same as carrying it alone; if someone is in danger or overwhelmed, staying present includes helping them reach proper support.

Erro comum
Overcorrecting into silence or agreement with everything. Tolerance that looks like caring can still skip a needed no, so being present can include a kind, honest no.

Mais práticas para Spiritual Bypassing: When Practice Becomes a Way Around Your Feelings
- Catch the spiritual phrase that arrives before the feeling
Notice when a true-sounding spiritual idea shows up the instant something hurts, and pause before using it.
- Feel it, acknowledge it, then let it go
Let a painful feeling fully arrive and be acknowledged before practising letting go of it.
- Come down from the head into the body
Bring attention down to the physical felt sense of what is happening, instead of staying with ideas about it.
- Let anger show you where your no is
Treat anger as information about a limit being crossed, rather than as a spiritual failure to hide.
- Name the human need you decided you were above
Find the ordinary need for love, closeness or recognition that your practice has been used to deny.
- Question the "good practitioner" and its shoulds
Notice when being spiritual has become an identity to protect, enforced by an inner list of shoulds.
- Keep your practice and bring in psychological work too
Let spiritual practice and psychological work each do their own job, instead of asking one to do both.
