Test your growth where it has to show up
Check whether what you have realized and matured into is visible in your body, your close relationships, your work and your community.
Por que funciona
Showing up, in Wilber’s later framing, is about integration — growth expressed across the four quadrants of inner experience, shared relationships, the body and behaviour, and the systems you live in. Growth that lives only in inner experience or in ideas can feel complete from the inside. Deliberately checking each outer arena gives it something to be tested against.
Como fazer
- Write one realization or change you consider real in yourself.
- Ask four questions about it: how does it show in my body and habits? In my closest relationships? In how I work? In how I take part in my community or the wider world?
- Mark the arena where the answer is weakest.
- Choose one visible action there this week — a habit changed, a repair made, a contribution offered.
- Ask someone who sees you in that arena whether they notice any difference, and take their answer as data.
Evidência
Publishers Weekly’s 2017 review summarizes showing up in The Religion of Tomorrow as "attending to integrating." The publisher’s description of Finding Radical Wholeness (2024) ties the Four Quadrants to helping readers show up and be more present, and Esbjörn-Hargens’s overview describes the quadrants as the "I," "we," "it" and "its" sides of any situation. In a 2021 interview reported in Psychology Today, Wilber described showing up as serving humanity in the world. The four-arena check is an application and is untested. (anecdotal)
Showing up is the least developed of the four in Wilber’s writing, and the sources describe it loosely. Treat the four arenas as a checklist, not a definition.

Erro comum
Picking the arena where change is easiest to display. The weakest arena is usually the one where people closest to you would answer the question least kindly.

- Audit where your growth has actually gone
Look back over the last few years and name, honestly, how much of your effort went into waking up, growing up, cleaning up and showing up.
- Notice the gap between the cushion and the kitchen
Compare what you touch in meditation with how you actually treat the people you live and work with.
- Expect shadow in "advanced" people, starting with yourself
Treat spiritual or developmental advancement as no guarantee against old patterns, in teachers you admire and in yourself.
- Be somebody before you try to be nobody
Before chasing the dissolving of the self, check whether you have done the ordinary work of building one.
- Add waking up when you have only grown up
If you are mature and capable but have never trained attention on awareness itself, give the contemplative strand a small daily place.
- Pick the neglected strand and take one concrete step
Choose the dimension you keep skipping and commit to one small, specific practice in it for a month.
- Borrow other people’s eyes on your four strands
Ask people who see you in different settings where they think you are strong and where you are not, because the neglected strand is the hardest to see from inside.
