Trace one shift through all four strands

Take one way you have changed and look for it in how you handle impulses, relate to people, see yourself, and think.

Warum es wirkt

Loevinger described each stage as having characteristic signs in impulse control and character formation, in the mode of interpersonal relations, and in self-conception and cognitive style. The claim is that these are not separate traits but expressions of one underlying frame. If a change you notice is a change in that frame, it should show up in more than one strand; if it shows up in only one, it may be a skill, a habit, or a circumstance instead. Looking across strands turns a vague sense of "I’ve changed" into something specific enough to examine.

So gehst du vor

  1. Name one way you see things differently than you did five or ten years ago, in a sentence.
  2. Impulses and character: when you want something now, what happens between the wanting and the doing, compared with then?
  3. Relationships: how do you handle disagreement or difference with people close to you, compared with then?
  4. Self-conception: how would you have described yourself then, and how now? Notice the kinds of words, not just the content.
  5. Thinking: what kinds of questions used to have one right answer for you and now have several?
  6. Note where the shift appears in all four and where it does not. Leave the gaps as open questions.

Evidenz

Loevinger (1973) states that the stages have characteristic manifestations in impulse control and character formation, in mode of interpersonal relations, and in self-conception and cognitive style, and that ego development is a different strand from intellectual and psychosexual development. The theory is set out at length in her 1976 book. The four-strand reflection is an application of that description, not a validated measure. (mechanistic)

Retrospective comparison with your past self is shaped by memory and by the story you now tell. This exercise helps you notice; it cannot place you at a stage.

Counting a new skill or a new vocabulary as a new frame. Learning to talk about feelings is not the same change as relating to people differently when it is hard, and the strands that have not moved are often the most informative.
