Walk one conflict through four perspectives
Write the same disagreement four times — as you, as the other person, as a neutral observer, and as someone seeing how context shaped all three.
Warum es wirkt
In the person-perspective sequence each new perspective can take the previous one as an object: the second person can see that the first-person view is only one view, the third can stand outside both, and the fourth can see that the third-person "neutral" view is itself shaped by context. Writing a single conflict from each position in order makes those shifts concrete and shows the exact point where your seeing usually stops.
So gehst du vor
- Pick one real, current disagreement — small enough to write about in ten minutes.
- First person: write what happened and what you want, in your own words, without softening it.
- Second person: write what the other person sees when they look at you in this conflict — how you come across to them.
- Third person: write it as a fair bystander who knows both of you would describe it, with no side taken.
- Fourth person: write how background, roles, culture and the setting shaped all three accounts, including the bystander’s.
- Read the four side by side and mark the one that was hardest to write. That is your edge.
Evidenz
The sequence is drawn from O’Fallon’s STAGES model, which links first-, second-, third- and fourth-person perspectives to sensing, thinking, cognition and awareness, and from the published definition that each person perspective "involves being able to observe the prior person perspective as an object" (O’Fallon et al., 2020). The early steps match childhood research on social perspective taking, which describes children moving from self-reflective (second-person) to third-person and mutual perspective taking between about ages 7 and 15. The four-account writing exercise itself has not been tested. (mechanistic)
The childhood levels and the adult person perspectives are two research traditions that use similar labels; they are not the same scale. Writing a fourth-person paragraph is not evidence of holding a fourth-person perspective.

Writing the second-person account as your own case in their mouth. If their version mainly explains why they are wrong, you have written first person twice.

- Write their account in their own voice
Tell the story of the disagreement in the first person as the other person, using the words they would use.
- Check your version of them by asking
Treat your picture of someone else’s view as a hypothesis, and get their perspective directly before acting on it.
- Write the observer’s account
Describe your own conflict the way a fair bystander who knows both of you would, using names instead of "I" and "they".
- Notice what shaped every account, including the neutral one
Ask how background, role, culture and setting shaped your view, their view and the observer’s view alike.
- Take their perspective without taking on their feelings
Separate understanding what someone thinks and wants from feeling what they feel, and use the first when you need to solve something together.
- Separate the well-mapped steps from the speculative ones
When you read about person perspectives, sort each claim by what kind of evidence stands behind it.
- Hear which perspective you speak from
Read back what you wrote or said about a situation and mark each sentence by the perspective it speaks from.
