Tend well-being as a separate path from maturity

Because seeing more and feeling better are different kinds of growth, give each its own attention.

Warum es wirkt

In studies by Bauer and McAdams, ego development (maturity) and subjective well-being behaved as distinct facets of a good life with different predictors: goals emphasizing conceptual exploration or intellectual growth went with higher or rising ego development, while goals emphasizing intrinsic or socioemotional growth went with higher or rising well-being. If that pattern holds, growth in perspective will not by itself bring growth in contentment; the second path needs tending on its own terms.

So gehst du vor

  1. List three growth goals you are currently pursuing.
  2. Mark each as mainly about understanding (seeing more, making sense) or mainly about living well (relationships, enjoyment, meaningful activity for its own sake).
  3. If all three are of one kind, add one goal of the other kind.
  4. Once a month, check in on both: "Am I seeing more?" and separately "Am I living more fully?"

Evidenz

Bauer & McAdams (2004) found, in 125 students and 51 adults, that exploratory goals went with higher ego development and intrinsic goals with higher well-being; Bauer, McAdams & Sakaeda (2005) found mature participants emphasized integrative memories and happy participants intrinsic ones; Bauer & McAdams (2010) found intellectual-growth goals predicted increases in ego development three years later, and socioemotional-growth goals predicted increases in well-being. In a 2026 study, an automated maturity indicator for emotional integration was unrelated to hedonic well-being (Madl & Cook-Greuter). Two chapters in Pfaffenberger, Marko & Combs (2011) address the question directly but could not be read for this page; Glen Rogers’ 2011 review of the volume describes Jack Bauer’s chapter as reanalyzing four studies and finding ego development and happiness empirically and conceptually distinct, and Tracie Blumentritt’s chapter "Is Higher Better?" as reviewing studies that link ego development to effective performance by counselors and nurses and that find nuanced curvilinear relationships to mental-health vulnerabilities. These are correlational studies in mostly student and conventional-range samples; they say little directly about people at Construct-aware or Unitive stages.

Assuming that once you understand yourself well enough, contentment will follow on its own. The studies suggest the two grow by different routes.
