Close the reading and come back to the room

Put the stage reading down, feel your feet and breath, and let the shame loosen before you decide anything about where you stand.

Perché funziona

Shame tends to pull attention into self-judgement and makes the body feel small and exposed, which is the opposite of the state needed to read carefully. Turning to the room and the body interrupts that ranking and brings you back to the ground you are actually standing on. Only then does reading about stages become something you can weigh, rather than something that places you.

Come farlo

  1. Close this page or put the reading face down. You do not need to finish the article today.
  2. Put both feet on the floor and press them down gently, noticing the pressure.
  3. Slowly name five things you can see in the room, without judging any of them.
  4. Let your breathing find its own pace, and let your shoulders come down.
  5. Remind yourself, in your own words, that a stage model is a set of ideas that researchers still argue about, not a score you have been given. Then do one small ordinary thing, like making tea.
  6. If the shame feels hopeless, or any part of you says there is no point, do not stay with the reading: go to the next practice now.
  7. Come back to the reading another day, when you feel steady, and only read the sections that do not leave you ashamed.

Prove scientifiche

Treleaven (2018) and Ogden, Minton and Pain (2006) are clinical texts that describe grounding and staying within a tolerable range of arousal. Siegel (1999) describes that range as a 'window of tolerance', the zone where a person can still think and feel at once. These are clinical texts, not trials of grounding for reading about developmental theory. (clinical)

No source here tests this grounding step for reading about stage theory. The critiques on this page are themselves qualified by their authors' accounts, and the grounding steps are general practice, not a verdict about where anyone stands.

Errore comune

Reading straight through the critiques to work out where you 'really' are while still ashamed. Ranking yourself while flooded tends to land on the harshest answer.
