Ground first when sitting becomes frightening

When contemplation brings fear, shaking or unreality, stop, open your eyes, and reconnect with the body and the room before anything else.

Perché funziona

When a sitting or contemplation begins to frighten, the reliable anchors are the body on the floor and the sounds and objects around you. Attention given to the outside world offers steady input that is not part of the sitting. This is a safety step, not a claim that the practice has reached an insight, and it does not depend on any theory of the ox pictures.

Come farlo

  1. Stop the sit. Open your eyes and look at one fixed object in the room.
  2. Feel your feet on the floor, press them down, and name three sounds you can hear.
  3. Stand up and walk slowly for a minute, noticing the floor under each step.
  4. Drink some water and do a simple ordinary task, such as putting something away.
  5. Do not go back to open or blank sitting today. If the feeling continues, or you have any thoughts of harming yourself, contact a clinician or a trusted person now, or a crisis line (in the US, 988), or your local emergency number.

Prove scientifiche

This is general safety guidance rather than a tested treatment for any condition, and no trial has tested the ox-herding pictures. (anecdotal)

Grounding is a first step, not a cure. See the meditation-related-challenges page for longer-term support, and do not use this practice to push through a frightening session.

Errore comune

Pushing through. Treating shaking or unreality as a sign that the ox is nearly tamed, and sitting longer to get past it, makes the distress stronger.
