Carry the practice into ordinary action

Take one routine activity and do it with ordinary attention, offering the small help it needs without making a show of it.

Perché funziona

The last two pictures move from the empty circle back into the world. The Terebess page quotes the Kapleau-credited text for the tenth picture: “He leads innkeepers and fishmongers in the Way of the Buddha.” Zhi’s abstract reads Zen enlightenment as a process of action rather than an outcome. A 2018 Korean-language comparison by Sin, read through a summary of its abstract, describes Kakuan’s series as moving from the subduing of afflictions to liberation and then to the practice of bodhisattva conduct. The practice is where ordinary action is done with attention, so the cushion is not the only place the practice shows up. This is an interpretive reading of the last pictures.

Come farlo

  1. Choose one routine activity this week, such as washing up, walking to a shop, or a conversation with someone.
  2. Do it at ordinary speed, and notice contact with the material and with the people involved.
  3. When a moment asks for a small help, offer the help that is needed, without making a show of it.
  4. At the end of the day, note one ordinary act you did with attention and one where you forgot.

Prove scientifiche

The return to the world is the tradition’s and Zhi’s reading of the last pictures. No trial has tested it. (anecdotal)

The pictures are poetry. They describe an inner sequence and do not prescribe what helping others should look like in any particular life.

Errore comune

Treating ordinary life as a rank above the cushion, so that washing up becomes a performance of enlightenment, or dropping practice altogether once the sitting feels finished.
