Why it works

How to do it

The principle of transfer-appropriate processing predicts that retrieval should match the conditions of intended use. Additionally, reducing cues progressively increases retrieval effort, which increases the memory-strengthening per retrieval event. Morris, Bransford, and Franks (1977) established transfer-appropriate processing directly, showing memory performance depends on the match between how material is encoded and how it is later retrieved. (mechanistic)

Progressive cue reduction is a principle extrapolated from retrieval practice and transfer- appropriate processing research rather than directly studied as a standalone protocol.
