フォーカリズムは、まだ存在するはずの他のすべてのことを無視することで、未来の出来事を実際より大きく見せる。

Why it works

インパクト・バイアスは部分的にフォーカリズムを通じて働く——未来の出来事を想像するとき、私たちはほぼ完全にその出来事だけに焦点を当て、そのとき依然として存在するであろう人生の残りの部分——進行中の計画、関係、満足、苛立ち——を見落とす。これが焦点となる出来事を、実際にはそうならない形で未来の感情生活を支配するように見せてしまう。

How to do it

  1. 未来の良い、あるいは悪い出来事を想像した後、そのとき自分の人生にも当てはまるであろう他の10のことをリストにする。
  2. 普通のことも含める——仕事、関係、日課、小さな喜びや苛立ち。
  3. このより完全な描像を念頭に置いて、感情予測をやり直す。

エビデンス

Wilson et al. showed that asking people to account for other aspects of their future life (the "nothing else has changed" technique) reduced impact bias significantly in controlled studies. Schkade and Kahneman’s "focusing illusion" study demonstrated the same mechanism outside the lab: people overestimated how much living in California would raise life satisfaction precisely because being asked about climate made that one factor loom larger than it does in lived daily experience. (observational)

Controlled experiments used short time horizons and hypothetical scenarios; real-world durability of the focalism-correction technique is less studied.
