Why it works
How to do it
Hedonic adaptation is well replicated: lottery winners and people who suffered permanent injuries both returned closer to their happiness baseline than predicted (Brickman et al.). Gilbert’s work further documented that people consistently over-predict duration of positive affect. Frederick and Loewenstein’s review synthesizes the breadth of this adaptation across income, health, marriage, and material acquisitions, establishing it as a general feature of the hedonic system rather than a quirk of any single life domain. (observational)
Baseline levels of happiness vary by individual and by life domain; adaptation is not uniform. Some positive changes (e.g., reduced commute time, increased autonomy) produce more durable happiness gains than others.
