Let the ground give way without grabbing a new theory
When every belief starts to look like a story, stay with the disorientation instead of rushing to a new framework.
Por qué funciona
Cook-Greuter (2018) writes that people at the Construct-aware form of stage 5/6 often feel great existential tension, because there is no longer a single reality to stand on and all theories look like the ego’s attempts at order. She describes the pain as something that can be embraced as a way into deeper connection, and describes people at this stage as statistically rare and somewhat marginal to society. The quickest relief is adopting a new theory that restores certainty; staying with the disorientation, with support, keeps the seeing from collapsing back.
Cómo hacerlo
- Name plainly what has been lost — for example, the sense that the right framework is out there to be found.
- Notice the pull to adopt a new system, teacher, or theory quickly, and let yourself delay that choice.
- Keep the basics steady: sleep, movement, food, and time with people who know you.
- Find at least one person who can hear you describe this without needing to fix or label it.
- If the disorientation turns into lasting hopelessness or you stop being able to function day to day, talk to a qualified professional; that is a different need from developmental exploration.
Evidencia
The existential tension of stage 5/6, and its description as rare and marginal, come from Cook-Greuter’s 2018 essay. A literature review by Pfaffenberger (2005) concluded that advanced development is facilitated by stable personality characteristics and meaningful engagement with challenging life events. On rarity, Murray & O’Fallon (2020), citing Cook-Greuter (2004) and Torbert (2009), give very rough estimates that stages up to Strategist cover about 98% of adults and 92% of professionals; in a Loevinger-tradition corpus of 43,933 scored completions, Madl & Cook-Greuter (2026) report 14 item ratings at the highest Loevinger level. None of this tests the practice; it is a careful application of the descriptions. (anecdotal)
A feeling that nothing is solid can also come with grief, burnout, or depression, which call for different care. A stage map should never stand in for that.
