Catch the map being drawn
Notice, in an ordinary moment, the instant raw experience is turned into a label and a story.
Por qué funciona
Cook-Greuter (2018) describes the ego as the organizer and interpreter of experience whose job is to turn it into a coherent narrative, and language as dividing lived experience into separate objects with boundaries and evaluations. In her account the Construct-aware stage is the first that begins to see this as a process rather than as simply how things are; O’Fallon (2020) likewise places "words/concepts and boundaries viewed as constructs" at 5.0 Construct Aware. Catching a label in the act turns the habit from a lens you look through into something you can look at.
Cómo hacerlo
- Choose a ten-minute stretch of ordinary time — a walk, a commute, waiting in a queue.
- Each time a word arrives for something you perceive ("tree", "too loud", "late"), silently note "label".
- Notice, if you can, the brief gap between the sensation itself and the word that names it.
- Later in the day, try it once with a person: catch the moment they become "difficult" or "kind" in your head.
- Do not try to stop labeling. The point is to see it happen.
Evidencia
The view that the ego constructs a narrative and that language divides experience into objects is Cook-Greuter’s own account of the Construct-aware stage, set out in her 2018 Integral Review essay and grounded in her sentence-completion research. O’Fallon’s 2020 paper places the seeing of words and boundaries as constructs at the start of her MetAware tier. The noticing exercise is a practical use of that description, not a tested intervention. (mechanistic)
Noticing labels is a common contemplative exercise available at any stage. Doing it is not evidence of Construct-aware meaning-making, and no study tests it as a route there.

Error común
Treating labels as the enemy and trying to experience without them. In Cook-Greuter’s account maps stay useful as temporary approximations; what shifts is seeing them as maps.
