Journal with open sentence stems — and do not score yourself

Finish your own open-ended sentence beginnings in writing to hear the frame you make meaning from, without rating it.

なぜ効果があるのか

Loevinger rejected multiple-choice versions of her test because choosing among options asks a person to work inside the test-maker’s frame of reference, while a free response requires them to project their own. Open sentence beginnings work the same way in a journal: with no options to pick from, the ending you write carries the assumptions you did not know you were bringing. Reading those endings back later, rather than judging them as you write, is what makes the frame visible.

やり方

  1. Write ten sentence beginnings of your own about the parts of life that matter to you — for example "When someone disagrees with me…", "What I owe my family…", "A good life…".
  2. Finish each quickly, in your own words, without editing toward a better answer.
  3. Put the page away for at least a week.
  4. Read it back and ask only descriptive questions: what do I take for granted here? Whose voice is this? What would someone who disagrees with me notice?
  5. Do not assign yourself a stage. The value is in noticing, and self-scoring turns the page back into a performance.

エビデンス

Loevinger (1973) explains that the sentence completion method is free-response because the ego is, among other things, the person’s frame of reference, and a free-response item requires the person to project it; she reports that attempts to substitute a multiple-choice format did not work. The scoring manual (Hy & Loevinger, 1996) describes the test as a free-response, semi-projective instrument. Using self-written stems as a journaling practice borrows the format for reflection only. (mechanistic)

Rating your own completions is not a valid measure: scoring requires training against the manual, and Loevinger’s own studies found people can shift their responses when trying to make an impression.

出典

よくある間違い

Writing the ending you think a more developed person would write. The moment you aim at a level, the page shows your picture of that level instead of your frame — and the honest, unflattering ending is the useful one.
