Name your primary selves
Identify the few inner selves that make most of your everyday decisions, and give each a name.
Warum es wirkt
The Stones describe primary selves as protective patterns that formed early and now operate so continuously that a person experiences them as simply "me". A self that has no name cannot be noticed as one option among several. Naming it — the Pusher, the Pleaser, the Responsible One — is the first separation: once a pattern has a name, you can catch it arriving rather than only seeing its results afterward.
So gehst du vor
- Write down the three rules you follow most reliably without thinking (for example: always be productive, never disappoint anyone, stay in control).
- For each rule, picture the inner figure who enforces it. Give it a plain name: the Pusher, the Pleaser, the Controller.
- Note when each one first became important in your life and what it was protecting you from back then.
- For one week, mark the moments you notice each named self taking over a decision.
Evidenz
Primary selves are the foundational construct of the Stones' Psychology of Selves, described with case material in their manual and in their book on the inner critic. This is a practitioner model drawn from their clinical work, not a construct that has been measured in controlled research. (anecdotal)
No controlled study of Voice Dialogue was found (searched 2026-10-14); the value of naming selves rests on the Stones' clinical reports and practitioner experience.

Häufiger Fehler
Naming the selves you dislike and skipping the ones you are proud of. The responsible, competent, always-on selves are usually the most powerful primary selves precisely because they are rewarded.
